Port Germein to Nullarbor

Port Germein was our first stop on our trip around Oz on January 21st 2011. 460ks from Mildura, Port Germein is a small fishing port with a long jetty.  It is on the Northern 'end' of the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia.

The kids had a ball playing in the bay, watching the tractor bringing in boats - too shallow to launch them anywhere along this lenght of coast!

We arrived In Cowell, on the downward run of the Eyre Peninsula, after travelling through hot, arid Port Augusta and Whyalla.  It is a pretty little town, and we were quite excited to nab our first cheap night - a $5 motorhome site!.  We spent the evening down on the jetty, where Tyson was in his element pulling up Blue Swimmer crabs - yum!

Master fisherman!

Our beach babe!
Arrived in Port Lincoln, on the tip of the Eyre Peninsula, 23rd Jan.  Quite a big place, with a large shipping port, huge marina, and again, a nice little bay for swimming right on the caravan park foreshore.

We spent the days here swimming and riding along the awesome foreshore cycle tracks - some very hilly! Trav and Tys had a huge stingray swim right around in them in the bay pictured here.
I love swimming!

Happy Australia Day Trav!

Just South of Port Lincoln, on the Eyre Peninsula, SA, is Coffin Bay National Park. Although it sounds morbid, it's actually named after one of Matthew Flinders mates, FYI. We wound into sheltered Yangie Bay camp area (with long drop dunnies and campfire sites) and setup the van. Taking a drive, we came over the crest of a hill to see stunning Avoid Bay (ironic again - definetely not a bay one needs to avoid!). This was literally breathtaking. With huge cliffs that drop into the sometimes wild Southern Ocean, protecting long white sandy beaches, with the bluest water. Over in Almonta Beach, we saw emus, kangaroos, goannas, and native birds nesting high in the cliff faces. There are several small islands just offshore, and lots of rocky crevaces to explore. We loved this place - one that won't be forgotten!

Streaky Bay
About 230km north of Coffin Bay, Streaky Bay was a sleepy little town with a great pub (pre-requisite for any Aussie town) and good fishing.  On the way there we drove into several sites (see below).  We stayed in Streaky Bay from 28-30th Jan.  The park was on the foreshore where you could walk out about 100m in the bay with the water only as high as your ankles.  While here, it got to 45degrees, and the water almost scolded you!  Tyson went out in his kayak, we went to the local for tea, and caught some 'shitty's' (bait fish) and crabs off the jetty.  Tyson was  in his element!

Ceduna foreshore

Across the Nullarbor...
We spent three stinking hot 47 degree days in Ceduna, so this is the only photo I have!  it was a well set-up place, based on fishing and mining.  The K9 unit was ever present, and straight onto any trouble makers that had had too much sun.
After car repairs and picking up our generator, we were ready to head West!

Bunda Cliffs, SA, Great Australian Bight Marine Park, along the Nullarbor - breathtaking!

We didn't see any of these!

After 8.5 hours of driving, we made it into WA on 2nd Feb - hooray!

RFDS emergency airstrip - there are several of these along the Nullarbor.

Trav admiring our roadside stop, overlooking a dry lake bed - everything here was dry.
All roadhouses have their water freighted out to them in tankers - I won't take the Murray for
granted ever again!
